PROPOSED PROTEST AGAINST THE KILLINGS BY FULANI HERDSMEN
RESOLUTION OF THE STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT
Rising from a meeting of all the SUG Officials which included members of the Executive Council, Senators and Members, House of Representatives from across faculties and departments, the Government decided to address the proposed protest thus:
"We condemn the killings of innocent, peaceful and harmless citizens in the strongest words. We grieve with the families of the victims of the attack and pray that such barbaric act does not occur again." As regards the proposed protest scheduled to hold tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2nd, 2016, the SUG decided to distance herself from the protest in all aspects. First, the fact that the protest is not holding within the university community makes it beyond the reach of the Union. Second, considering the effect of mob action, it is always very difficult to control a protest no matter how peaceful it is intended to be. When things go wrong, it will be difficult to give account of those who have participated in the protest. This spells a great danger for as many as will be embarking on the protest. We thus advise ALL Lions and Lionesses to stay away from the proposed protest for the sake of safety and security.
However, since we cannot force anyone against his/her will, it is important we state categorically that any student of the university who joins the proposed protest does so at his/her own risk, and the SUG will not be responsible for it.
The meeting was aimed at uniting the various arms of the Student Union Government and to form a working synergy amongst the various arms. The Principal Officers of the Union reiterated their resolution to work together with one another thus uniting the three houses in one course: The Welfare of the Students. There were many suggestions, opinions and reactions to issues of importance to the students and they were well-treated while those in attendance charged one another to participate fully in the government instead of leaving it for those in certain arms of the government. The needed change begins with each and every one of us, and we need not sit silently waiting for others to do it for us.
SECURITY
The security of the university community has remained under threat as some bad boys have taken it upon themselves to attack harmless students on campus at night, especially around Lawn Tennis Court and the Stadium. It has degenerated to a daily occurrence and working with the security department, the Student Union Government is doing its best to apprehend and bring these hoodlums to book. We hereby warn as many as partake in this nefarious act to desist from such as it no mercy will be shown to anyone caught in this act.
Also, we wish to advise every Lion and Lioness to be security conscious. Stay away from the Lawn Tennis Court at night; instead of passing through the stadium, use the expressway for safety. Other security measures should be taken to ensure you play your role while the SUG and the university administration play theirs. Our street lights will become functional again sooner than we anticipate, and this will help foster the level of security at night.
