UI student develops lemongrass-based insecticides against beans weevils

A biochemistry doctoral student at the University of Ibadan, Mojisola Karigidi, who is the founder of Moepelorse Bio Resources, has produced a bio-pesticide for preserving beans, pulses and grains.
Giving the background to her pet research product, Karigidi said “weevils that attack beans and maize in storage can destroy as much as 40 per cent of these crops, causing huge loss to farmers and traders.”Farmers and food crop traders who are mostly uneducated, she added, indiscriminately apply insecticides to these crops in storage to minimise or eliminate losses as much as possible.
That practice has serious health and environmental implications, so said the researcher while speaking with The Guardian. “So, as a biochemist working on medicinal plants, I decided to investigate and develop a plant-based bio-pesticide to get rid of insect pests that

DEPUTY PRESIDENT, NYCN, BLOWS HOT

- Calls for youth inclusiveness in politics nationwide
Report by OKEKE CHIBUEZE

Youths from across the Southeast gathered at Akanu Ibiam International Airport on Sunday, 29th July, 2018 to welcome the newly elected officers of the National Youth Council of Nigeria from the SouthEast led by the Deputy President, Comr. Innocent Nduanya. The election which held in Gombe State had in attendance youths from across the country.
It was a great crowd from the five states of the SouthEast that gathered at the airport to give the Deputy President a heroic welcome.
Speaking to journalists at the airport, Comr. Nduanya reitrated the commitment of the newly elected government to ensure that the Nigerian youths take their rightful place in the politics of the nation. According to him, the youths of Nigeria are prepared  to have a united front, speak with one voice and ensure that they are not relegated to the background any longer. He said in his statement that the various sub groups of youths in the country will be operating under the umbrella of the NYCN and as such, there will be no division or rancour among Nigerian youths any longer.
He however sent a word to all political parties in the country to ensure that come 2019, 60% of their tickets are given to youths at all levels. This should include Federal, State and Local Government levels. He made it clear that only parties that comply with this directives will get the support of the Nigerian youths who make over 70% of the nation's population.
"The youths can no longer be used as thugs and instruments of election disruption in our country. Our youths now know what they want and this time around it is no longer business as usual'
"For the Igbo youths, it is time to come together to take what belongs to us. We know what we want and that is true federalism and proper restructuring of the current arrangement of things in the country."
"We will be touring the 36 states of the country as we did during the elections. We will be touring the country to sensitize youths to know what they want and pursue it. Most of us have been able to withstand hunger for years before we got to wherer we are today. If the youths learn to bear the pain of their good decisions and stand by them, we will have a greater future. It is nigerian youths that placed us where we are and we will not disappoint them"
Other matters he pointed out bordered on the plans of the Council to be all-inclusive in their decisions and resolutions. He explained that the Council will ensure that all youth organizations and associations in the Southeast are carried along in their decisions and their respective interests protected.
Also speaking to journalists on his mission for the youths in Southeast, Prince Chibuike Echem, the National Vice President, Southeast NYCN, said it is our time. According to him, it is time to reconcile every faction with a united voice, one identity and one front from the SouthEast. He reitirated the comments of the National Deputy President that is will not be business as usual. He said gone are the days when the youths are bought over to do the biddings of others. It will henceforth the interest of the youths or nothing.
Lastly, we spoke to Comr. Agnuncha Izunna Chidulue, the newly elected Organizing Secretary, NCYN, SouthEast Zone who said that in the line of politics, it is believed that the youths are tools in the hands of the politicians. It will no longer happen as the youths are waking up to their responsibilities, their needs and their interests. He promised that his office will do well to support every youth in the SouthEast who have great ideas and create opportunities for the youths in the Southeast who have entrepreneurship running in their blood. According to him, the Council will be working with established entrepreneurs like Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah who they have visited after the election to discuss wasy through which the Council can woirk together with him to create more opportunities for the youths in the SouthEast.

PRESS RELEASE

OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY PRESIDENT
NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA (NYCN)

What we have today is a new beginning in the National Youth Council of Nigeria characterised by the unflinching determination from men of integrity. It is highly important to state the fact that, the Gombe  Congress, 2018 has been applauded far and wide because of its transparency and due cognisance  of the constitution NYCN.

We went to the congress with high optimism  to turn wrongs to rights, to bring a new direction that is devoid of any political or individual attachments but in full attachment to Nigerian youths who have over the Years clamored for a leadership that will work in direction to the needs of Nigerian youth. Sacrifices has been made by all who are devoted to seeing a great National Youth Council of Nigeria. We have played politics and in the process of the politicking, we have probably offended each other knowingly or unknowingly. I believe this is the time to forget about the past and forge ahead in  unity towards restoring the dignity of the National Youth Council of Nigeria.

In a special way, the Deputy President, Comrade Innocent Nduanya appreciates the immense contributions of the Jaugar Baur of youth empowerment, the willingly working governor of Anambra State, the pace setter, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano (Akpokudike), Chief Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah (Ebube Chukwu Uzo, Afa Igbo Efuna) CEO, Capital Oil and Gas, Chief Chinedu Obidigwe (Aka Oma Jide Aku, Ubiam Anaa), Osinachi Adi Mma (CABASSA) and many others for all your personal contributions in making my journey, aspirations, and position a worth while struggle.
In the same vein of appreciation, the Deputy President (National) specially thanks Gombe State Government under the able administration of His Excellency, Alhaji Hassan Dakwambo (OON), the BoT Chairman, Amb Dickson Akoh and members, Advisory Board led by Ben Duntoye, the outgoing National Transition Government led by ever dogged Acting President, Comrade Chinedu Mayor Onujeko, the Congress Planning Committee, the Electoral Planning Committee, the SouthEast Leaders and the State Chairmen. Your numerous contributions will forever be remembered and appreciated.

Finally, it is important to state the obvious that, the new government of Comrade Bello Usman Shagari as the President and Comrade Innocent Nduanya as the Deputy President, and other members of the National Executive has resolved to bring the best leadership to Nigerian youths. The new government from all quarters has been adjudged as the best line up and will do the needful towards restoring the dignity of our youths

Nigeria is a great country filled with great potentials majority of which is embedded in our youths and this is the time to unravel the potentials and make proper use of it towards making the Nigeria we want.

Build The Youth, Build The Nation!!!

Comrade Innocent Nduanya
Deputy  president NYCN
