THE FIRE INCIDENCE AT OKEKE HOSTEL, UNN: An Eye-Witness Account

INTRODUCTION:
It is no longer news that 300 series in Okeke Hostel of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka has gone up in flames. However, there are a number of things you may not know or most probably, you have heard but still do not believe. As a result of this, I have taken it upon myself to add mine to the many write-ups about the darkest of all Christmas in the history of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

THE DETAILS FROM MY PERSPECTIVE
On Wednesday, 23rd December, 2015 at about 8:00pm, I was about retiring for the day, haven returned early that night, when my friend and colleague in the department sent me a distress call, “Chibueze! Where are you? Please I need your help. My hostel is on fire.” On hearing her, I found myself wishing again I were a Superman (if it ever existed outside the world of dreams and fictions). Putting on all I had put off beforehand, I hurried to Isa-Kaita Hostel from the University’s Second Gate (you can never know the distance if you have not visited UNN). With each step I wished I could fly faster than I ran. Before I got to the scene, I had called as many persons as came to mind, even though some of them already heard and were all making moves to salvage the situation.

On arrival, I saw

NUESA, UNN sets New Record with the CONDUCTS of the FIRST EVER ELECTRONIC VOTING

The 2015 election of the National Union of Engineering Students (NUESA) University of Nigeria, Nsukka was a huge success courtesy of the innovation emanating from the minds of the members of the electoral board headed by Sen. Nwangele Godwin Chukwuemeka. The whole process was conducted online enabling student to vote even from the comfort of their rooms, classrooms, lodges, etc. within the stipulated time for the election. Also, turnout of voters which was usually very low in the faculty of engineering witnessed a turnaround as the students of the faculty were intrigued by the whole idea of the electoral commission leveraging technology so as to curb all of the malpractices in the electoral process. The voter turnout was 200% more than that of the last election thanks to the freedom given to students to vote from wherever.
At the beginning of the electoral process,

Re: REVISED TIME TABLE OF EVENTS FOR 2015/2016 ACADEMIC SESSION

The above headline appeared on the university website on Tuesday, 8th

comments have been spreading about it. I deemed it necessary to
address this issue due to the number of questions I have been faced
with as regards the revised timetable of events.
A careful observation will make it clear that the timetable under the
heading above is not for undergraduate students but for post-graduate
students.
Before the timetable of events, there is a clear indication

PRESS RELEASE.

STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA
PRESS RELEASE.
09-11-15

Calvary greetings fellow Nigerian students;
We appreciate your efforts in trying to maintain peace and order in
the university community despite our discontent with some issues.

With regards to the promise made in my press release yesterday about
the issue of compulsory payment of N70,000 for laptops and payment of
N12,000 by second years, WE are pleased to let you know our
resolutions in the meeting held today with the school management as
follows;

1. LAPTOPS:
After a very long deliberation and what seemed like an impossible
task, both parties were able to shift ground from their extremes.
While the school management insisted that the laptops must be
purchased once, the SUG maintained that;
(a) it has to be optional,
(b) it has to be price friendly,
(c) it has to be spread over a number of years i.e, paid by installments.
It was later agreed that it can be paid for by installments @ N75,000
payable in 3 installments (years) rather than the N90,000 payable in
two instalments. This was agreed by both parties because it will
lessen the economic burden on parents and guardians as they can now
pay #25,000 and COLLECT THE LAPTOP, then pay another #25,000 the next
year, and then another in the 3rd year.
Albeit, those who have the money to pay once can do so. Like we said
earlier, we are interested in students that can't afford to pay once
for this commodity.
2. INTERNET ACCESS FEE:
This area is quite saddening as so many will/might not be comfortable
with the bargain at this point. The 2nd years were asked to continue
with the N12,000 they paid for internet access in their first year.
But the BIG question is; do they use a special type of Wi-Fi that
other years don't use? Of course NO, then it's unfair. Owing to this
singular reason, we pleaded that they pay what other years pay which
is N6000. It was greatly opposed by the management with the
explanation that ICT is taking more than was paid for even in its
skeletal nature. At the end of the argument, it was agreed that the
financial burden be spread across every other level for equity and
justice to prevail. This may be painful to students in higher levels,
but we must all learn to be our brothers keepers. The agreed amount
became N8000 for everybody.
However, before you become swift in laying blames, let me give you an
analysis: if 2nd years are allowed to pay N12,000 for internet access
till they graduate, careful observation should let you know that the
internet fees will become N12,000 permanently for everybody in a
matter of some years. So we looked at the long run before entering
into this agreement so that eventually the internet access fee remains
N8000 instead of N12000.
On this note, we would love to bring to the notice of the incoming SUG
officials, on no account will the internet access fee be increased
above N8000 from any level to ensure continuum in government.
We fought and we really put in Our best in this. We want to let us
know that in any dialogue, there is always a "win some and loose some"
scenario. We have gone the extra mile to ensure that we come back with
a positive reply, please we beg everyone to bear with us. For
everywhere we look there is work to be done. But the assurance is; we
will not only work, but lay a foundation for continuity in the
government.
NB: All agreements start immediately as N4000 WILL BE REFUNDED TO
SECOND YEARS THAT HAVE PAID SCHOOL FEES fees while others years that
have paid will have to pay extra N2000.
Inconveniences are highly regretted.

God bless you all.

TO CHECK FOR YOUR NAME IN THE JUST-RELEASED FIRST SUPPLEMENTARY LIST

This is the first time I will tow this line of helping
aspirants check their names in the admission list. It
is not going to be an easy task for me due to other
commitments here and there. However, if you have not been able to
check your name in the newly-
released admission list, do send in your
Registration Number via whatsapp
(08023139377) and I will help you check it.
But please note the following:
1. When sending your jamb registration number, please explain the
purpose. I do not think it is right
to just send in a number like some who want to be
added to the whatsapp group, without indicating
what you want. You don't just throw a code or
number at people and expect them to decipher
what you really want done for you.
2. I will also ask for your patience because I may
not be able to check it immediately your message
comes in. As soon as I check, I will reply you with
my findings.
3. For those whose names will not be found on the
list, do not lose hope. This may not be the last admission list from
the university, and you need do
nothing but pray and hope for the next list.

PRESS BRIEFING FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT, SUG, UNN

THE PRESIDENCY,  001

STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT,

UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA.

PRESS BRIEFING,  30/10/2015

WELCOME

With great joy in our hearts we welcome all the newly admitted students as you arrive to start off your clearance processes.

Fundermentally,  doggedly and with deep sense of Comradeship,

We also welcome all the returning students from the holiday. The Den of Lions has been dry without you. (alua.!!!!)

ON BANK PAYMENTS

It has come to the notice of the Union that some banks take advantage of the rush for payment to charge students exorbitantly. For this reason, we have decided to bring it to your notice that BANK CHARGES for every payment remains N300.00 and nothing more.

Please do well to report to the Union any bank that goes beyond this benchmark by calling us through this number:

08152895924, 0813 722 5682

ON TRANSPORTATION WITHIN AND OUTSIDE CAMPUS:

Some shuttle operators may also sieze the opportunity to extort from students. To avoid this, we  also wish to inform/remind you that shuttle fare within and outside campus remains unchanged. They are as follows:

Within Campus:

Cars - N40

Buses - N30

Outside Campus:

Cars - N50

Buses - N40

Please do well to report any defaulting shuttle operator to us through the Office of the Director of Transport (08034544083 or alternatively, 08152895924), indicating the Route Number of the shuttle, that is, the 3-digit number printed boldly on the shuttle with the name of the University and TransRoute on the sticker bearing the number.

CLEARANCE FOR UNEC STUDENTS

Students who are meant to resume at the Enugu Campus are hereby informed that their clearance shall be at the Enugu Campus of the University, and not at Ekpo Ref, Nsukka Campus. Thus, it is important they take note of this and  report to Enugu Campus for their clearance.

DON'T FORGET,

Even as a cub,  The Lion remains the King of the Jungle.

Once again we welcome you to the Den of Lions. We are dedicated to ensure that your interest is protected throughout your stay here.

SUCCESS WISHES FOR ALL MY PROFESSIONAL COLLEAGUE AS EXAMINATION STARTS ON 9TH NOV. GRACE ALL THE WAY.

UPDATE ON PAYMENT OF ACCEPTANCE FEE AND CLEARANCE

When you generate your invoice, look out for the Remita Retrieval Reference Nunmber on your invoice. That is what the bank is meant to use, not Invoice Number.
Secondly, the payment should be done through the Remita Payment Platform, not e-Tranzact. Please take not of these changes to avoid confusion when you get to the bank to make payment.
ON CLEARANCE:
According to the announcement from the university authority, the venue for clearance is Ekpo Convocation Arena. Since there is no specification for students who are meant to resume at UNEC, this may mean that all freshmen are to come to Nsukka Campus for their clearance. If there is any change or update on this, you will be promptly informed. For now, this is the

UPDATE ON ACCEPTANCE FEE PAYMENT: RRR CODE DOES NOT EXIST and other Error Responses!!!

First I wish to heartily appreciate as many as have called, commented or sent messages through facebook or whatsapp as concerns their experience with the newly activated acceptance fee payment. Your responses and feedback helps us know where there are loopholes and thus communicate back to the right quarters for improvement.
Thank you all.
Now to the business of the moment. If at this time any bank is still telling you that the acceptance fee payment has not started, please do well to ignore the bank and check another. If banks in faraway lands like Lagos have started receiving acceptance fee payments on behalf of UNN, then I do not know why any bank should claim that the payment has not started.
That said, for those who have successfully paid their acceptance fee and got their receipt from the bank which contains their RRR Code, it is important you read this carefully. The RRR Code you receive from the bank is meant to give you access to the portal where you fill in your acceptance form and then print your admission slip. However, you also need to understand that

UPDATE ON PAYMENT OF ACCEPTANCE AND OTHER FEES!!!

Below is an update from the university portal on payment on Acceptance
and other Fees by new students. Below this official announcement is my
candid advice and opinion based on experience both as a student and a
manager of electronic information of the Student Union. I will
therefore advise you read carefully to the end even if you already
know that the payment has been reactivated. Enjoy!!!

"The payment of acceptance fees for the freshmen is now activated!
Consequently all new students can go ahead and pay their acceptance
and fees.
Below is the process for the new students to get on with their new
academic experience:
1. Print out your name from the admission list published on the Website.
2. Verify your account on the portal unn.edu.ng
3. Change your password.
4. Complete and submit your profile on the portal.
5. Generate payment invoice for acceptance fee
6. Proceed to the bank to pay the acceptance fee
7. Proceed back to the portal and print your acceptance fee receipt
and acceptance letter
8. Generate payment invoice for other fees – (school fees,
accommodation fees, laptop fees (for first years), etc.)
9. Proceed to the bank to pay the fees at the bank
10. Proceed back to the portal and print your receipts
11. Proceed to Ekpo Ref for clearance by Admissions Office/Faculty
officer with all relevant receipts and Certificates
12. Get assigned with Matriculation number by the Faculty Officer
13. Do your Biometric capturing also at Ekpo Ref.
14. Collect your Laptop from ICT Hardware Team
15. Log on to your profile and register your Courses online
16. Get your Student Identity card from ICT at Obieri Computing Centre
17. Keep copies of all your printouts from the website and the portal
for future references!
Enjoy your stay"

NOW MY ADVICE:
1. On step 5:
I know most of you have generated invoice already before now after
updating your profile. I want to plead with you to go back to the
portal to generate a new invoice for this purpose. Some who have this
old invoice affirmed that it bore 2014/2015 Academic Session instead
of 2015/2016. Please do well to regenerate your invoice and crosscheck
carefully the information on it.
Also, ensure that the invoice number is entered correctly at the bank
when you go to make payment.
2. On steps 6 and 7, 9 and 10:
There is nothing like the usual "confirmation order number" on the
instruction above. Usually, it is the confirmation order number that
you log in with on the portal to enable you print your acceptance fee
receipt and your admission letter. Thus, I am not yet sure how this
will play out. I know a number of persons who have waited for this
news will be in a hurry to try out the process. Please be generous
enough to share your experience with us when you do so that others may
be well guided.
3. On step 8:
There is a strong indication by this that the payment for laptops by
first years has been separated from the school fees schedules. Hence,
the instruction says " Generate payment invoice for other fees –
(school fees, accommodation fees, laptop fees (for first years),
etc.)". This may mean that you will have to generate a separate
invoice each for school fees, laptop fees, accommodation fees (this is
not unusual), etc.
I am sure you will want to know what the "etc." stands for. Sincerely
I do not have an answer to that yet but I promise to keep you informed
as it unfolds.
4. On step 11 to 16:
These are things you will have to do when you come to the university
for your clearance. Every step before these may be done in or outside
the university campus. Thus, it is important you start reporting to
campus as soon as you can. Through his press briefing released this
morning, the Pesident of the Student Union Government, Comr. Orji
Peter Ekene, reaffirmed the validity of the 29th OCTOBER resumption
date. I therefore need not dwell on it. However, I regret whatever
inconveniences you might have experienced while the confusion lasted.
We promised to give you our best and we are doing our best to ensure
that.

ON PAYMENT OF SCHOOL AND OTHER FEES BY RETURNING STUDENTS:
The university is working hard to stabilize things concerning the
SCHOOL FEES SCHEDULES and subsequent instructions on payment by
returning students. As soon as we get valid wind of this from a very
reliable source, we will inform you. Thus, I have no say concerning
the much touted "School Fees Schedule for the 2015/2016 Academic
Session" on social media. One thing the President of the Union has
assured us through his press briefing last night is that "your school
fees remain as it is, as any form of RUMOR about increment remains
nothing but a rumor."

RESUMPTION IS 29th OCTOBER, 2015

Ordinarily, I would have not spent my time going over this again but I
am getting tired of people calling or sending messages asking me if
the CONTROVERSIAL TIMETABLE I posted online is still valid. It is
quite disheartening to receive such calls and messages as it makes it
appear we are unsure of our duties and their implications in the lives
of the students we have been called to serve. Please note that there
is nothing controversial about this timetable. It is valid, and as it
stands, lecturers and staff of the university await your return to the
Den of Lions for resumption of academic activities. So, if you have
not started preparing to return to school, please start now. According
to the calendar, freshmen should be in school on Thursday, October
29th, 2015 to start their clearance processes while returning students
are expected back on

UPDATE ON ACCEPTANCE FEE PAYMENT

There are indications that the payment of acceptance fee will now be
by the purchase of PINs from deisgnated banks. However, there are
still issues with this update as the designated banks have not been
specified by the university authority neither has a link for entering
the PIN when purchased been created in the university portal.
Our correspondents who checked across some banks within the university
campus returned with the same response that the banks neither have any
instruction on acceptance fee payment nor the PIN.
Thus, while you wait for these issues to be rectified, you may print
out your ADMISSION NOTIFICATION SLIP HERE:

NIGERIA AT 54: MATTERS ARISING

At 54 Nigeria was under the Goodluck Jonathan Administrtion, at 55
Nigerians made a choice for a change. 2015 was seen as the year of
turbulence or what I call the "Nigerian apocalypse" due to the fact
that it was the year of elections which is usually accompanied by our
traditional post election violence. The world lost hope in us but we
kept on believing. We showed them the part of us that has erstwhile
been non existent, we showed unity, we showed peace and above all we
showed Love. All these was sufficient enough to see a successful
transition of government that made Nigerians record breakers! The
first time an incumbent President lost his bid for reelection, the
first time Nigeria ever had a realistic opposition party to the PDP
and all whatnot. All these led to a change in the governing party from
the PDP to the APC. With a new administration in power, Nigerians feel
rejuvenated by the devotedness of the new regime towards its anti
corruption campaign and insecurity. With the recent probe of the
Senate President Bukola Saraki on the grounds of falsification of his
declared assets, Nigerian politicians all got the fever that it would
no longer be business as usual.

However, judging from the pattern of the anti corruption charge, one
is tempted to notice the witch hunting nature of it. Nonetheless, it
is a necessity to strike fear in the mind of political thieves and
their cohorts, it is a bold step towards making public fund a less
attractive way for public office holders to enrich themselves, its a
bold step towards tackling the menace of corruption that has ravaged
this country and its own economy.

We are winning the war on terror as #operationlafiyadoyle has so far
proved to be effective as whatever is left of the boko haram sect has
been proven to be pockets of resistance and people in Northern part of
Nigeria go about their legitimate businesses without fear.

The power sectors has rapidly improved as it has been reported in
some quarters that light stays on uninterrupted for up to 24 hours.

In spite of all these, a lot still needs to be done to put Nigeria
where it is supposed to be, to put a nation so blessed with natural
resources at the top of the food chain of great nations in Africa and
beyond.

However, Nigerians can hold their heads up high knowing that we are
making progress and we show more interest in matters that affect us
the most in recent times than in the past.

Today Nigeria is 55 and we all have a reason to celebrate and to also
reflect on the progress made by our prophets of 'change'and expect a
genuine "breathe of fresh air" in our great State.

Say no to terrorism

VERY IMPORTANT AND URGENT!!! The Article Every Nigerian from the SOUTH Needs to Read

I am writing this post with a lot of caution and trepidation. I have
never subscribed to ethnic chauvinism and I actually detest being
labelled as a tribal bigot. I am usually very careful because I have
friends and colleagues from every part of the nation and some of my
best friends are not even from my side of the country. However, recent
events are making me to have a deeper reflection and I wish we-
Southerners in this
instance- can have some kind of introspection. Out of 25 appointments
made so far, 18 are from the North, 3 are from the South West, 4 are
from the South South while the South East has ZERO appointments. A
tweet which I saw today stated that "southerners are only competent
when it's time for elections but northerners are competent in terms of
governance" and this made the following thoughts run through my mind:
1. Only Southerners have been accusing fellow Southerners of
corruption. Oshiomole has been attacking Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as if
Ngozi turned down his marriage proposal. The same Oshiomole tried to
make nonsense of Akinwumi Adeshina's successes in the agriculture
sector. Ambode tried to pull Fashola down and successfully smeared him
with stains.

Presidential Candidate Kidnapped as AUCHI POLY Holds SUG Elections

The Students' Union Government (SUG) of the
Federal Polytechnic, Auchi (AUCHI POLY) in Edo
State has held its election amid intimidation and
violence. One of the two presidential candidates in the
election, David Utibe of the Department of
Computer Science, was kidnapped by unknown
hoodlums a few days to the election. David, who was kidnapped with others, was
released on the day of the manifesto. He had
bandage on his arm and walked with the aid of
crutches. The school authorities are investigating the
incident, which prevented David from carrying
on with his campaign. Despite the violence and pressure from
students, the Auchi Polytechnic Electoral
Commission (APECO) did not postpone the
election, clearing the way for David's rival
Joseph Iroghama, an HND 1 Accountancy
student, to intensify his campaign.

BETWEEN AGU CHRISTIAN AND PEDRO

Ordinarily, it would have been wrong to compare the two administrations of the Student Union Government in UNN owing to the fact that they had their peculiarities. One laid the foundation while the other is building on it. But since the former president of the Union, Comr. Agu Christian, started the comparison, giving himself credit and demeaning the achievements of the current SUG, silence to the issues he raised will send the wrong vibe and thus make uninformed students and readers think is right.
Haven gone through the said interview, below is my take on it.
It is important to note that development is a continuous process. SUG in UNN was banned for years, and so it will be wise for any person to see its return as a rebirth, and expect the attendant challenges of growth in every society to also assail the Union. Of a truth,

FORCEFUL EVICTION OF STUDENTS FROM HOSTELS AVERTED

Thanks to the intervention of the Student Union Government, the proposed sudden eviction of the students from the hostels was stopped. Consequently, students were given till Friday, August 21st to vacate school hostels with the exemption of students from certain faculties and departments for comprehensible reasons.
During an interview with the Vice President of the Union, Comr. Nebo, Joy, we learned that
