The Inter-Faculty Quiz Competition of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus, organized by the Assistant Secretary General, Comr. Chibuike Onah hed at Student Multi-Activity Court had in attendance representatives of the Faculties of Arts, Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering.
Comr. Jennifer Obidiebube moderated the first round while Hon. Bonaventure moderated the second round.
The questions came from diverse areas like current affairs, religion, sports, politics, international relations, health, etc. There was however a little disagreement between the moderator for the second round, Hon. Bonaventure and the only student representing the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Eze Amaechi over a statement made by the moderator as
concerns a bonus question which was cancelled. His statement in part was, "...if you don't like it, go to another faculty". There were cries of partiality from some representatives. Also, there was an uproar when someone from the audience, Precious Okoye made an observation that one of the representatives from the Faculty of Social Sciences had a copy of Citizens Current Affairs booklet and opened it at intervals during the contest. Rt. Hon. Precious Nwancha rose in defence of his colleague that the observation was not made during the contest but after, and besides, the time given to answer questions would not have been enough for anyone to flip through any book for answers. He also said his colleague never flipped through the booklet throughout the contest.
Comr. Chibuike Onah started by asking the audience what the essence of an examination is. After gathering different opinions, the ASG decided to cancel the competition and rescheduled it to a later to be announced date.
Mixed feelings have, however, trailed the event and its outcome. While a number of persons said the Faculty of Social Sciences should have faced outright disqualification, others were of the opinion that since there were no laid-down rules from the onset of the quiz competition, and since the whistle-blower only did so at the end of the quiz competition while collation of results was ongoing, her observation was thus invalid.
Representatives of the Faculty of Social Sciences further explained that the copy of current affairs found in the hands of their colleague was what they all used to prepare for the quiz, and it was only normal that they brought it to the venue. Had they been asked to put away any material, they would not have had it around, this was also in defence of the accused that he did not make use of the material.
As at press time, we could not get a response from the Assistant Secretary General of the Union who promised to get back to us at the right time.
