A meeting was held between officials of the Student Union Government of both campuses of the University of Nigeria and representatives of the university administration. There a number of issues were discussed and resolutions were made as concerns the welfare of students and the mid-semester break. Below is a communique made available to us after the meeting.
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA
JOINT INTERACTIVE SESSION
BETWEEN UNN MANAGEMENT TEAM AND THE STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT (SUG) HELD ON MONDAY JUNE 8, 2015
COMMUNIQUE
Irked by the prevailing circumstances leading to the suspension of academic activities on the campuses of the University of Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Benjamin, Chukwuma Ozumba, invited the Students Union Government (SUG) to an
interactive session.
In attendance were the Principal Officers of the University and other Management personnel.
Top on the agenda was:
Power supply distribution within the campuses:
All in attendance appreciated the very laudable efforts of the University administration to cushion the effects of low power generation from the national grid which is in a near zero-state to the high cost of diesel (where available) to power the generators. The attendant students demonstration which was un-called for, was most regrettable. It was attributed to poor information management/communication.
The house condemned in its entirety, the fake media publications attributed to 22
dead UNN students involved in a motor accident. The news was not only based on falsehood and calumny but also to malign the students into negative reactions to strike and put the university in disrepute.
The media was advised to cross-check facts before publication. For the avoidance of doubt the house reiterated that a 3rd year Veterinary Medicine student
traveling to Onitsha was involved in a motor accident at 9th Mile, Enugu. Two Peace Mass Transit buses and a tanker lorry were involved in the accident that
claimed three lives one of whom was the UNN student.
Decisions:
The SUG and the University
Management therefore appealed to the students now on MID-SEMESTER BREAK to exercise restraint and be calm as most of their other issues are being
addressed.
They should also watch out for announcements on their resumption dates.
The meeting rose with COMMENDATION of the actions put in place for the comfort of the students and staff in general and appealed for patience to key into the various CHANGES taking
place.
